About Christy Lehmkuhl
Based in Durban, South Africa, Christy Lehmkuhl earned a Fine Arts Degree from the Durban University of Technology.
She primarily focuses on drawing, utilising pigment ink pens to create predominantly monochromatic pieces that occasionally incorporate a touch of watercolour and ink.
Central to Christy’s distinctive style is the exploration of local botanicals, birds, and fish as primary subjects. Her artistic choices are deeply influenced by the rich tapestry of her immediate surroundings. Organic forms serve as a wellspring of inspiration, and Christy meticulously captures their essence through intricate details, emphasising contrast, light, and texture with a fine interplay of small lines. Equally potent is her exploration of polarities, particularly the contrast between light and dark.
Each work reflects a meticulous commitment to detail, requiring countless hours of drawing. This fastidious process is an integral part of her approach, emphasising the connection between patience, creativity, and her nuanced exploration of each subject. It is an intimate and purposeful act, inviting viewers to claim these moments of profound solace as their own.
Drawing has been a lifelong friend to Christy. She regards it not merely as a skill but as a devoted companion on her journey of personal and creative exploration.
Her work is frequently sought after by interior designers, both locally and internationally, although she chooses to let the work resonate independently without seeking the spotlight herself.
